Me, Aashima and a House for Sale
It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. There was nothing special that day. Just on this day of every week, Me and Ashima spends a few moments with each other and collect some sweet memories.
While sitting at the dining table, I was watching Aashima cooking in the kitchen. As usual, she was looking very beautiful while cooking with a wrapped sari around her waist. Some hair hanging from her sweaty forehead, coming on her face was bothering her. With her two fingers (index and middle), she gently shoved those hairs behind her ears to avoid the distraction.
Suddenly at the same time, I was distracted by my phone's ringtone. When I picked it up, there was Rajat on the other side. Rajat is my cousin (maternal uncle's son). We both have a very good bond as brothers. He is the only son of my uncle, so he has brought him up very fondly. There is no lack of anything. And his nature is also very good. But he was always worried about small things. In a way, he was not happy in his life despite everything being with him. And that day too, he was into something.
"Hey! What's up? I guess you're upset about something?" I asked.
"What should I say, bro? I have been fed up with this place. I think my life will end here while doing farming." Rajat said.
"Why? Tell me what happened?" I asked.
Rajat continued.
"What else should I tell, bro? It seems that this is not a village but a forest and I live in this. No one here bothers what is going on in the outside world, or how far has this world gone now! Here everyone is happy in their life with small things. It seems as if nobody here wants to grow in their life. I cannot live like this. I want to see the world. I want to have fun. But I feel my dreams will just be dreams. That's why I made a decision. "
"What?" I asked
"I am thinking that I should sell everything here and buy a luxurious house in the city and go and live there. I don't like my house. The road is dirty here. When it rains water gets filled here. When the strong wind blows, the house getting filled with the leaves from the garden trees. I am just getting fed up. That's why I want to leave and sell this house and go to the city. And you have to help me with this work." Rajat finished his talk in a single breath.
I got worried hearing his words. I tried to make him understand that, living a peaceful life in the villages is better than the hustle and bustle of the city. Nowadays people are doing whatever they can to live like that. He should appreciate what he has. But it was clear that Rajat had made up his mind and was not giving up his stubbornness.
During this, Aashima came and sat near me to listening to Rajat's words. She asked me to listen to Rajat in a gesture. I agreed to Rajat and said, "Never mind. When you have made up your mind, I will do something soon." Saying this, I hung up the phone.
Then I turned to Aashima and asked her the reason for her gesture.
So Aashima said, "I have an idea to convince Rajat. You call Rajat tomorrow and tell him that you have given the advertisement to sell his house. And also tell him that he too should start looking for a new house in the city for himself. But you give his sale advertise after a month, in such a newspaper which mostly getting distributed in his village."
She smiled saying so and I got her idea.
The very next day I called Rajat and said, "I have given the advertisement in various newspapers. Within a few days, you will start getting calls. You too can start looking for a house in the city."
Rajat said, "Good thing bro. Thank you very much."
His words made me feel that as if he was very keen to sell his house.
Rajat now started looking for a good house in the city for himself. He would wake up every day in the morning and looking for a suitable house with newspapers' commercials. But he couldn't find anything suitable.
A few more days passed and he started getting desperate to find a house. Then one day he saw an advertisement in the newspaper. It said,
"HOUSE FOR SALE
Do you want a beautiful house of your dreams which is in a beautiful environment, away from the crowded city, surrounded by hills? If yes, call the number given below."
Seeing this, Rajat thought, "I would book this house today." To dial the number of his landline, when he looked at the phone number of that advertisement, he found that the phone number was his own and that advertisement was of his own house. Seeing all this, he probably felt sorry and understood that he has been living in his dream house forever.
Then one Sunday of the next month, I received a call from Rajat. From the other side of the phone, he said, "Brother, forgive me. I have now understood what you wanted to explain. If you had not tried this trick, I would not have understood what I had!"
I smiled and said, "Bro, nowadays in our life too, despite everything we have, we run after other things which do not mean much to us. We think that there are many problems in our life. Shouldn't we need to change our attitude towards our life? Yes, we should. And if you cannot change yourself, we need someone who can help us with this. I am glad you realized it. And the whole credit for changing your thinking goes to your sister-in-law."
Hearing my words, Aashima, sitting near me, bowed her head on my shoulder and placed her hands on my hands. This was her way of saying "Thank you."
After that day Rajat stopped complaining about every small thing and thanks to my wife, my brother's attitude towards his life changed forever.
